Violence at Howe Community Park Leaves 4 Shot in Arden-Arcade Sacramento

Officials in Sacramento County are probing a gunfire incident that occurred Saturday evening at Howe Park at the time officers were clearing an unauthorized event of a crowd of several hundred.

What Led to the Shooting

Deputies initially got calls about Howe Park shortly before half past six in the evening after learning of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Shortly after, a second caller reported concerning a reported physical confrontation unfolding at the location.

A law enforcement helicopter was sent to survey the area but reported no active disturbance. However, it was evident that an enormous crowd had come together at the location without authorization.

When the Shots Rang Out

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies worked to disperse the crowd by encircling the gathering and announcing over their public address systems ordering the hundreds present to leave immediately. Roughly 15 minutes were spent for individuals to vacate.

Just as the crowd began to move that an estimated 20 to 25 shots echoed through the night. The shots sent the crowd running in all directions. Law enforcement at once began searching for victims.

Four Victims Hospitalized

In total, four victims were confirmed as gunshot victims. The four individuals — consisting of one woman and three men all reportedly in their mid to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to nearby hospitals. Medical personnel confirmed that two had critical injury classifications, one sustained moderate wounds, and one had injuries classified as minor. Thankfully, all four were in stable condition.

The Investigation

The bulk of the shooting was determined to have taken place along the Cottage Way corridor alongside the local Home Depot located at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Investigators identified additional shell casings scattered along Cottage Way. Ballistic damage were observed in the metal fencing bordering the Home Depot. This ballistic evidence indicated that one of the gunmen had been aiming south from along Cottage Way aimed at the Home Depot store. The store itself was temporarily locked down while law enforcement worked the area. Crime scene technicians and detectives stayed at the location for hours.

Suspect Information

Information obtained over scanner radio traffic confirmed that a Kia connected to the shooting was intercepted in an area within Solano County. Four people were held for questioning. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were sent to retrieve the detainees to return them to Sacramento for further questioning. Video evidence confirmed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
